Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai was re-arraigned Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the Department of State Services (DSS) accused him of unlawfully tapping the phone of the National Security Adviser.
El-Rufai arrived at the court complex shortly before 9 a.m., accompanied by heavy security presence. The DSS cordoned off the area, restricting access to journalists, court staff, and the public, which led to a brief protest at the gate.
The demonstration was led by activist and former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who criticized the security measures.
"El-Rufai’s arraignment should not deny Nigerians access to a public facility," Sowore asserted.
A source within the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) revealed that DSS operatives picked up el-Rufai from their facility at around 7 a.m., ahead of the scheduled court proceedings.
"The case is not ours. DSS operatives came to pick him up around 7:00 a.m. for arraignment," the source explained.
The re-arraignment centers on allegations that el-Rufai authorized or was involved in the illegal surveillance of the NSA’s phone. The development has intensified ongoing political and legal tensions surrounding the former governor.
