…Russia says attack 'unprecedented'
Russian authorities report that Ukraine has
launched an "unprecedented" attack on and around St. Petersburg,
coinciding with the final day of Russia’s annual economic forum.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed
responsibility for the strikes, stating that his forces targeted Russian
arsenals and a naval base in what he described as a justified response to
Russian aggression.
Zelensky also highlighted the reach of
Ukraine’s drone operations, revealing that Ukrainian drones traveled up to
1,000 kilometers (620 miles) to strike targets in Russia, including the navy’s
arsenals and a base in Kronstadt, the main outpost of the Russian Baltic Fleet.
He said that an oil depot in the Krasnodar
region, approximately 500 kilometers from Ukraine, was also targeted as part of
Kyiv’s long-range operations.
The Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance
of ending the war, accusing Russia’s President Vladimir Putin of wanting to
prolong the conflict.
Zelensky’s remarks came just days after Putin
dismissed the idea of direct talks, stating there was no point in meeting
Zelensky and asserting that a truce would only allow Ukraine to regroup before
resuming hostilities.
The recent drone attacks follow earlier
Ukrainian strikes near St. Petersburg during the economic forum’s opening days.
