The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 25th August, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which celebrates the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government through a statement released on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In his message, Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world on this special occasion, encouraging all Nigerians to reflect on the virtues of compassion, humility, and service exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad.
“Eid ul Mawlid offers us a moment to pause and learn from a life characterized by kindness, humility, and dedication to others,” he stated.
He emphasized that these qualities are especially vital for Nigeria at this time, urging everyone regardless of their religious affiliation to contemplate their significance.
The minister also appealed to Nigerians to use this period to pray for peace and national unity, highlighting that maintaining cohesion is a shared responsibility.
He urged the populace to celebrate with moderation and mutual respect, and extended warm wishes for a joyful and peaceful Eid to the Muslim community.
Finally, Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, and to fostering lasting peace across the nation.
