The Ekiti State Government has inaugurated a 10-member Caretaker Executive Committee for the Okada Riders Association, charging members to promote unity, discipline, and peaceful operations among commercial motorcycle operators in the state.
Speaking at the well-attended event in Ado-Ekiti, the State Commissioner for Transportation, Kehinde Ajobiewe, said the committee was expected to provide effective leadership for the association and serve as a platform for regular engagement between government and operators on issues affecting their welfare.
He urged committee members to justify the confidence reposed in them by working diligently and transparently, while adhering to laws regulating commercial motorcycle operations in the state.
Ajobiewe called on Okada riders to support government policies, maintain discipline, and cooperate with the state in upholding law and order, urging them to conduct their activities in ways that safeguard passengers, motorists, and other road users.
He assured the association that the Ministry of Transportation would continue engaging its leadership and other stakeholders to address challenges facing commercial motorcycle operators and to promote an organised transportation system, adding that the inauguration would strengthen communication between government and the association on sector-related issues.
The Commissioner also appealed to aggrieved members to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution, assuring that the administration would continue providing an enabling environment for unions and associations to operate effectively and contribute to the state's socio-economic development.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Adebayo Abulola, congratulated the committee members and urged them to work as a team.
Abulola called on the new executives to cooperate with the ministry, security agencies, and other transport sector stakeholders, stressing that collective responsibility was essential to maintaining peace and order.
He advised the committee to place the interests of the association and the state above personal considerations, adding that unity and constructive engagement would promote peaceful coexistence among transport operators.
Responding on behalf of the committee, its Chairman, Kunle Asaolu, thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in the committee and pledged an open-door policy and accountability in administering the association's affairs.
He said the committee would work closely with the state government to improve internally generated revenue while ensuring that the interests and welfare of Okada riders were adequately represented.
Members of the newly inaugurated 10-member Caretaker Executive Committee, led by Comrade Kunle Asaolu, are: Gbenga Alade (Secretary), Olowuro Sunday, Saka Salami, Ajibade Ojo, Ademola Omotuyi, Ayodeji Jegede, Lukman Saka, Joseph Emmanuel, Oloruntola Idowu, and Agboola Emmanuel.
The inauguration follows the dissolution of the former executive of the Okada Riders Association at all levels in the state, a decision the government took on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Okada Riders Association.
