Former Ekiti State Governor, Dr
Kayode Fayemi, is set to host a high-level policy dialogue in New York on
Africa’s expectations of the incoming United Nations Secretary-General.
The dialogue, organised by the
Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement, is scheduled for
September 19, 2026, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General
Assembly.
Themed “Africa’s Expectations of
the New UN Secretary-General,” the gathering is expected to attract
policymakers, diplomats, academics and other thought leaders to deliberate on
Africa’s priorities at a time of significant shifts in the global political and
economic order.
The dialogue will provide a
platform for African stakeholders to articulate their expectations for the
future of multilateralism and contribute to discussions on reforming global
institutions to make them more responsive to the interests and aspirations of
developing countries.
According to Fayemi, the meeting
will also explore ways Africa can exercise greater agency in shaping the
emerging global order rather than remaining largely on the receiving end of
decisions made by major global powers.
Fayemi, who is expected to
welcome participants at the event, described the dialogue as an important
opportunity to reflect on Africa’s priorities, strengthen the continent’s voice
in global affairs and examine its strategic role in an evolving international
system.
The former governor is expected
to be joined by diplomats, policymakers and other prominent voices in
international affairs as they examine the opportunities and challenges facing
Africa under the incoming UN leadership.
