The Ondo State Government has effected the payment of the August arrears arising from the newly increased subventions to the four state-owned tertiary institutions in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

According to the statement, the payment marks the commencement of the implementation of the 60% increase in subventions to the institutions, aimed at enabling them to meet their salary obligations and improve the welfare of their workers.

The statement quoted Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as appealing to the striking unions to demonstrate good faith by suspending the industrial action and returning to work in the interest of students and the overall development of the state.

“This payment marks the commencement of the implementation of the 60% increment on subventions to the institutions, aimed at meeting up with salary obligations and improving welfare”.

“Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa therefore appeals to the striking unions of the institutions to, in good faith, call off the strike and return to work in the interest of our students and the overall development of the state”, the statement reads.

The government’s latest intervention comes against the backdrop of an ongoing industrial dispute in the state-owned universities. Non-academic staff of the three institutions commenced an indefinite strike on Wednesday to demand the implementation of the FGN/Unions Agreement, with effect from January 2026. The action followed a similar industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the affected institutions.
