Yomi Ayeleso of the Nigerian Tribune has emerged Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, following the election of new executive members of the chapel on Tuesday.
Ayeleso emerged alongside Rasaq Ibrahim of The Nation, who was elected Secretary; Oke Precious of Hope Newspaper, who emerged Treasurer; and Yinusa Ishola of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who was elected Vice Chairman.
The election ushered in a new leadership charged with steering the affairs of the Correspondents Chapel and advancing the professional interests and welfare of journalists operating in the state.
In his acceptance speech, Ayeleso described his emergence as a call to service, greater responsibility and sacrifice, expressing appreciation to members of the chapel for the confidence and support extended to him and the other newly elected officers.
The new chairman pledged that his administration would be anchored on transparency, inclusiveness, accountability and unity, stressing that the leadership would work to ensure that no member was left behind in the activities and decision-making processes of the chapel.
He said the administration would promote an atmosphere devoid of division, while creating greater opportunities for members to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the chapel.
Ayeleso also promised to introduce innovative ideas and initiatives while building on the achievements recorded by previous administrations. He said the objective was to reposition the chapel for greater visibility, relevance and impact within the journalism profession and the wider Ekiti society.
The chairman further pledged to strengthen the relationship between the Correspondents Chapel and the Ekiti State Government, as well as other stakeholders, noting that a constructive relationship would be beneficial to journalism and the development of the state.
According to him, while the chapel would maintain a professional relationship with government and other stakeholders, the new administration would remain committed to protecting the interests, welfare and professional rights of its members.
He assured members that opportunities, programmes, interventions and other benefits available to the chapel would be communicated transparently, while efforts would be made to ensure that such benefits were distributed fairly and equitably.
The new administration is expected to focus on strengthening professional solidarity among members, improving welfare, promoting ethical journalism and ensuring that the Correspondents Chapel continues to play a significant role in informing the public and holding stakeholders accountable.
With the election of the new executive, expectations are high that the Ayeleso-led administration will build on the foundation laid by previous leaderships and chart a new course centred on unity, professional excellence, members’ welfare and constructive engagement with stakeholders.
