Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced his intention to run for the Nigerian presidency in 2027, seeking to do so under a joint platform comprising the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The declaration was made on Thursday during a large rally at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, where both parties officially unveiled their alliance in Oyo State.
Addressing a diverse crowd from Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Lagos states, Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of a vibrant multiparty system for Nigeria’s democratic development.
He criticized the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, citing economic setbacks and challenges in social and political sectors.
The Oyo Governor stated that Nigeria is too large for any individual or group to turn it into a one-party state hence the alliance to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The rally also featured the unveiling of APM candidates for various political positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assembly seats.
The alliance was formalized through an agreement between APM leaders and a faction of the PDP led by Taminu Turaki.
The event marked the first public step in Makinde’s anticipated presidential campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling a strategic move to position himself as a key contender in the race.
