Former Ondo Governor, Mimiko Joins APC

 

Former Ondo State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, expressing strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Mimiko’s move marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, as he joins the ruling party after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been largely inactive in recent times.

The former governor’s defection was officially announced at the APC Ward 7 Secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area, where he was received by party executives, leaders, and supporters from across Ondo East and West federal constituencies. Mimiko’s resignation from the PDP came over a month ago, amidst speculations about his political future, as he had distanced himself from party activities.

 

In his remarks during the ceremony, Mimiko cited his decision to support ongoing efforts aimed at fostering peace, progress, and national development under President Tinubu’s leadership.

 

“There are many positive initiatives being undertaken by the Tinubu-led government. While more work remains, I am here to lend my support to efforts to keep Nigeria on the path of peace, progress, and genuine development,” he stated.

 

Mimiko also praised the federal government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing it as a commendable effort to democratize access to education. Additionally, he expressed support for the decentralization of policing, aligning with his long-standing advocacy for a state police system.

“The NELFUND initiative is a laudable effort, and my support for decentralizing policing is another reason I am pleased to join the current administration,” he added.

 

His defection follows his public resignation from the PDP, which he announced to dispel lingering speculation about his political alignment and to clarify his position after months of relative political silence.

 

Party leaders in Ondo State welcomed Mimiko’s move. Hon. Kolawole Babatunde, APC State Chairman, described Mimiko as a "progressive politician" whose entry into the party was akin to a homecoming. 

Babatunde praised Mimiko’s contributions to governance, particularly in health, education, and infrastructure, both during and after his tenure as governor. He also noted that President Tinubu’s policies are already yielding positive results, attracting progressive-minded Nigerians to APC.
