Democracy Day: FG declares June 12 public holiday

 

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year's Democracy Day celebration.

 

Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, winner of  June 12 1993 presidential election.

 

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

 

He emphasized that the annual observance of June 12 remains a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s democratic development, paying tribute to the bravery, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought to establish democratic governance in the country.

 

“June 12 holds great significance in Nigeria’s history, honoring the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democracy possible. Their legacy continues to shape the values and duties of the Nigerian state,” he stated.

 

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to upholding democratic principles such as the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

 

He also noted that the government remains committed to protecting and strengthening democratic institutions in line with its constitutional duties.

 

The minister assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with security agencies, will persist in enhancing internal security measures to protect lives and property nationwide.

 

He emphasized that a peaceful and secure environment is vital for sustaining democracy and fostering national progress.

 

Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to use the occasion for reflection, urging citizens to renew their commitment to national unity, civic responsibility, and respect for the law.

 

“As we observe this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to be law-abiding, support our democratic institutions, and remember that the strength of any democracy ultimately depends on the character of its citizens,” he said.

 

He also urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and actively contribute to efforts aimed at deepening democratic governance and promoting national cohesion.
